With approximately 33% of global soils classified as degraded, it is important to have a more holistic understanding in soil governance, management and the protection of the services that soils provide. There is a pressing need to determine the status of sustainable soil management efforts and raise awareness on its importance in the Asia Pacific region, particularly in Southeast Asia.
Defending the Defenders
The Philippines is consistently named as one of the worst places in Asia for assaults against advocates, having documented the highest number of recorded killings globally in 2018 (30), which further increased to 43 in 2019. Furthermore, at least 55 lawyers, prosecutors and judges have been extrajudicially killed since July 2016, which include land reform and environment practitioners.
