Environmental Rights

Human rights and the environment are intertwined. Human rights cannot be enjoyed without a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment; and sustainable environmental governance cannot exist without the establishment of and respect for human rights.

Environmental and Human Rights Defenders

The United Nations defines environmental human rights defenders as individuals and groups who, in their personal or professional capacity and in a peaceful manner, strive to protect and promote human rights relating to the environment, including water, air, land, flora and fauna.

Environmental Courts and Tribunals (ECTs)

Environmental Courts and Tribunals (ECTs) are essential to achieve environmental rule of law by giving litigants access to justice and a venue for effective and speedy dispute resolution.

Pollution in ASEAN

Pollution in ASEAN is a major threat to humans and the environment. Ambient air pollution is recognised as a global problem that requires local, regional and international action, while indoor air pollution significantly affects women and children and can have long lasting and costly health impacts.

Environmental Law Champions

Irum Ahsan

Irum Ahsan is being recognised for the establishment of the Asian Judges Network on Environment, support for 6+ green courts in Asia and 100+ Gender Based Violence Case Court in Pakistan, first such courts in Asia and fo the training, together with her team, of around 1000+ judges on environment and climate change laws and more than 500 judges and prosecutors in Afghanistan and Pakistan on violence against women related laws. She is an active advocate for climate rights and gender consciousness, and passionately steers the gender and climate discussions in the Asian Development Bank and at various international forums.

Koh Kheng-Lian

Koh Kheng-Lian is being recognised for her 60 year commitment to the Environmental Rule of Law, for her outstanding scholarship in environmental law and for the promotion of the concept of ASEAN Environmental Law. She introduced environmental law to the National University of Singapore (NUS) Law Faculty in 1994 and helped create the Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law at the NUS. She was the first woman appointed as Emeritus Professor in the Faculty of Law in 1997.
